Dance yourself healthy! Is frequently proclaimed by scientists around
the globe, along with the acknowledgement that dance can cure illness,
depression, overweight, chronic pain and other disorders.
Those present in my classes have confirmed this for me: Chronic pain of
years that are suddenly gone, chronic fatigue that are replaced by
renewed zest for life, and self-worth that suddenly reappear along with
the feeling that it is OK to be yourself. All this, because dancing
helps you discover who you are not what you are.
On a personal level, dancing has always increased my physical
consciousness, my femininity and thereof my sense of self-worth. The
kind of self-worth that is healthy and integrated and well-grounded deep
in your body. This kind of bodily grounding, as opposed to mentally, I
believe, is critical for the healing effects of dance.
In my classes, I always strive to have the women feel feminine and proud
of their achievements, regardless of size and age. Further, it is just
as important to allow the man to be true to himself, being a man. He
leads the woman and she is being led. It is important to enjoy the game
and the differences between the sexes while enjoying yourself.
In dancing it is ok to let go, to fill the room and enjoy yourself and
the other sex. Show everyone what you’ve got to offer. I love seeing the
change in my participants when they experience the revelation of being
fine with the way their bodies are and starting to play with their
bodies in movement being able to perform in ways they didn’t think
possible.
